I was born in a Christian home and raised by amazing Christian parents. I spent most of my childhood bonding with members of the church like pastors, song leaders and musicians rather than immediate members of my family. I grew up listening to Christian praise and worship songs. However, that doesn’t mean I’ve never listened to mainstream music. In fact, I’d say there was a time I was obsessed with Asian music.
As I grew in faith, I started liking mainstream music less and less and Christian music more and more. Honestly, if you listen to the latest song of Chris Tomlin or Hillsong, you will get so wrapped up that you’ll lose track of time.
When it comes to Christian music, everyone has their preferences. While some love contemporary Christian music, others prefer the Christian Synthwave or the 70s-style Christian music.
But, what Christian songs would be perfect for older adults or those elders living with Alzheimer’s?
How Great Is Our God – Chris Tomlin
“The splendor of a King, clothed in majesty
Let all the Earth rejoice…
How great is our God, sing with me
How great is our God, and all will see
How great, how great is our God
Name above all names
Worthy of our praise
My heart will sing
How great is our God”
Written by Chris Tomlin, Ed Cash and Jesse Reeves, this song bears with it the idea of God’s greatness and splendor. The lyrics of the song extol God’s attributes – His love, His faithfulness, His power, His mercy, His grace and His majesty. As you listen to this song, you will only think about God’s sovereignty and omniscience.
Listening and singing to this song will make you recognize the essence of glorifying God.
Here I Am To Worship – Hillsong
This famous worship song will live forever in the hearts of all believers!
“King of all days
Oh, so highly exalted
Glorious in heaven above
Humbly You came to the earth You created
All for love’s sake became poor
Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You’re my God
You’re altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me”
Created and sung by the popular multi-award-winning Christian band, this song is a masterpiece among all great Christian songs.
There is something very important about this song. It makes us realize how much God loves us and how many sacrifices He made for us. At its heart, this song reminds us of a forever-loving-and-caring God. It also reminds us how humbly He sent His only son to die for us.
This song was created to ascribe all glory to God alone. It’s about honoring Him with our praise and worship. It’s about thanking Him for His faithfulness and unconditional love that we didn’t deserve.
Thank You Lord – Don Moen
This contemporary Christian song written by Don Moen focuses on certain aspects of a Christian’s life.
“The bible says it’s a good thing to give thanks to the Lord, amen
I come before You today
And there’s just one thing that I want to say
Thank you, Lord
Thank you, Lord
For all You’ve given to me
For all the blessings that I cannot see
Thank you, Lord
Thank you, Lord
With a grateful heart
With a song of praise
With an outstretched arm
I will bless Your name”
The first line is centralized on the fact that we, Christians, should always give thanks to the Lord – not only for what He has done for you, but also for what you believe He will do more for you( For all the blessings that I cannot see). You see, it’s also the power of faith!
This song also illustrates how a Christian should bless and worship the Lord. And, I promise, you will be swept up the moment the singer hits the line “With a grateful heart…”
