2 Steps to Brush Baby’s Teeth

 Summary

 – Step 1: Start cleaning your baby’s teeth early

 – Step 2: From 12 months, start real brushing

Baby teeth are fragile and susceptible to decay because their enamel is not very strong. It is therefore recommended that you start cleaning your baby’s first teeth as soon as they appear, usually around 6 months.

This practical guide will help you brush your baby’s teeth properly from 6 to 24 months.

Step1: Start cleaning your baby’s teeth early

As soon as your child’s first teeth appear, get into the habit of cleaning them with a simple compress.

From 6 to 12 months, proceed either the traditional way or with a finger toothbrush.

 – Traditional way:

 ◦ Dry clean teeth and massage gums, as explained above.

◦ Moisten a compress or small piece of soft cloth with a bit of water.

 ◦ Gently rub the teeth with the compress: toothpaste is not yet necessary at this age.

 ◦ Take the opportunity to rub the gums gently, often swollen and painful under the effect of teething: for this purpose, you can put on the compress a little soothing gel.

 – With a finger toothbrush:

 ◦ Slip a special silicone toothbrush on your finger, shaped like a finger box, finished with small spikes.

Step 2: From 12 months, start real brushing

Starting at 12 months, begin real tooth brushing, at least once a day, in the evening after the last meal.

 Choose an appropriate toothbrush.

 – In a pharmacy, choose a toothbrush for the baby, adapted to his age:

 ◦ very soft,

 ◦ with rounded bristles,

 ◦ with a tiny head, preferably slightly curved.

 – Change your toothbrush as soon as the bristles wear out: usually after 3 to 4 months.

 Choose a fluoride-free toothpaste.

 – Do not use toothpaste until your child is 18 months old and able to spit out.

 – As soon as your child starts to spit up, use a special baby toothpaste without fluoride.

Note: From the age of 2 years, you can start using low-fluoride toothpaste.

 – Put a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on the brush; this is enough.

 Get into the correct position

 – At first, place your baby on your lap, facing you.

 – When your baby is standing, stand behind him or her with his or her head resting on your body.

Use the proper strokes to brush your baby’s teeth

 – Brush the top and bottom teeth separately.

 – Tilt the brush about 45° from the gum line.

 – Use the brush in small circular motions (not horizontal) from the gum to the tip of the teeth.

 – Scrub gently everywhere: go all the way to the back of the mouth, and don’t forget the inside of the teeth.
